course description

This two day studio course will provide you with the opportunity to absorb the working techniques of Sandi Komst, one of the region’s gifted abstract realists. Abstract realism in the Sandi Komst style begins with the inspiration point of subject matter and is then abstracted through composition, focal point, colour and brushwork. To fully understand her technique and results you will be encouraged to leave your preconceptions of process at the door and work toward embracing a new influence on your personal development and style.

During the course the following elements will be constantly reinforced through repetition and demonstration.

  • The relationship between inspiration and the specific approach to the application of paint.

  • When and how to use and create layers to enhance the design – additive and subtractive

  • Textures

  • Glazing

  • When, where, and how to apply soft edges to maximum effect.

 supplies to bring

Inspiration
The focus of the course is the outdoor world and the images that have captured your imagination: landscapes, seascapes, cityscapes, etc. Bring photo images with you that you find really appealing. Please print them out in a decent size that is easy to work from. 

Acrylic Paint supplies - Golden or Liquitex brands et cetera. No student quality.

Brushes
A couple of cheap hardware store 1”, a 1.5” or 2 inch, what they call chip brushes
a 1” inch old beat up brush is great for texture
At least one 11/4 inch cheap watercolor brush soft for glazing.  
A number of your favorite brushes in sizes 1/2 inch up to 11/2”  Sandi is a fan of the Rosemary brand brushes and uses their Ivory flats.
one  or more riggers.

Mark making tools. Silicone color shapers/Old credit card/etc. Palette Knives & scrapers.  small plus reference material Photos sketchers your own please. 

Painting surfaces
2  supports per day    

9x12. 12x16 or so.

Canvas panels  need to be gessoed at least once after you purchased them.

Stretched canvas and gessoed.

Canvas tapped  to support & with an added coat of gesso

Other supplies
Your choice of table easel, small floor easel or painting flat
Pallet either freezer paper or strip pallet

about sandi komst

Born in Nova Scotia and now living in Beach point, Prince Edward Island, Sandi Komst grew up dreaming of being an artist. Sandi  loves to capture moments through photography and recreate the essence  in oils, acrylics, mix medium and water colours. Inspired by the impressionists, Sandi is an awarding winning professional artist in studio and plain air work. Sandi is a popular instructor in Atlantic Canada and  has taught internationally. Her work can be found in numerous corporate and private collections.

If for any reason the participant wishes to cancel prior to two weeks before the commencement of the course, the full fee minus a 10% service fee will be refunded. Please note that there will be no refunds if the participant cancels within two weeks of the commencement of the course.
