About the Instructor

Wayne was the recipient of the 2006 Nova Scotia Portia White Award for excellence, innovation, and expression in the arts. The recipient of numerous grants from provincial and federal agencies including a Canada Council Established Artist Grant in 2001, other key professional successes include winning the 2004 juried competition to execute the mural entitled Réveil for the new Interpretation Centre at Grand-Pré National Historic Site. Boucher became a member of the Royal Canadian Academy in 2002. In 2012, “Drowning in Colour”

vimeo.com/71404777 was the first comprehensive documentary to be made about the Art of Wayne Boucher, and was directed and edited by Alan Collins. In 2014, three of his paintings were selected in a Foreign Affairs Canada design competition for meeting room carpets in the redecorated Nova Scotia Room, Pacific Room, and a Reception area at Canada House, London, UK.

Course Description

The purpose of the course is to have the artists express an idea through a painting medium. The workshop involves approaches to painting and presentation, use of materials, tools, critical thinking, manners and methods of expression and signification, editing, and processes of application in formulating meaning through paint.

The objective of the workshop, through preliminary explorations and studies is to create a responsive dialogue between the artist and their paintings in bringing essential elements of signification and process into a final work(s).

Course Details

The workshop will cover all painting mediums, and will focus on the use of water base paint, acrylic paint, and oil paint and pigment sticks. Artist participants should use art materials they are familiar with. Artists will use 4 to 5 canvases in an either rectangle or square formats, or a combination of both.

Supplies Required

Students will need to bring the following:

  • A sketchbook or journal for note taking.

  • If participants wish to use oil sticks, they may want to contact Ron Hayes at ArtCan in Canning, NS at Ron@artcan.com who sells R and F oil sticks in the 38ml small pigment stick size.

  • Paints & Colour Palette;
    titanium white, cadmium red middle, cadmium light, pthalo or ultramarine blue, and green, such as pthalo green. You can also order online, just google – R and F pigment sticks.

  • Participants are requested to bring 6 to 10 canvases, and drawing papers to the workshop.
    Canvas size : 11″ x 14″ and/or 16″ x 20″ & at least 2 square 16″ x16″.

  • Easels are not necessary, but useful if you are accustomed to using one.

Should our country still be gripped by COVID-19, Art Lab will only persist in offering our calendar of courses as common sense and regulatory recommendations dictate. If courses must be cancelled registrations will be refunded in full. The personal security of students and instructors is paramount.

If you would like to pay via credit card, please note there is an additional 4% transaction fee. Please indicate if you would like to pay by cheque and we will do our best to accommodate.

Cancellation Policy

If for any reason the participant wishes to cancel prior to two weeks before the commencement of the course, the full fee minus a 10% service fee will be refunded. Please note that there will be no refunds if the participant cancels within two weeks of the commencement of the course.
