About the Instructor

Joy is an award winning professional artist working in watercolour, oils and acrylic living in Portapique, NS. She graduated from the U. of Guelph with a major in fine art. He career has seen her enjoying distinction both at home and abroad with solo and group exhibitions in many select galleries in Toronto and the Atlantic Region. Joy is also a dedicated member of the cultural community and is on the boards of many cultural organizations.

Course Description

This two day workshop will give you a chance to watch Joy Laking paint and to ask questions and it will also push you to paint during the day. It is geared for people who already are painting in watercolours, but we will also cover all the basics as well. Please let Joy know at the start of the day if you are new to watercolour painting or if you are already a professional watercolour painter. Joy will gear the class to the participants.

Course Details

Day One:

9:00 to 9:15 introduction of class

9:15 to 9:30 demo of quick sketch

9:30 to 10:00 five quick sketches by students, (six pieces of 5x 7 w/c paper)

10:00 to 11:00 Joy will demonstrate and talk about starting a watercolour painting, talking about her colours and tools and her techniques.

11:00 to 12:30 Individual paint what you want, individual help

12:30 to 1:30 lunch bring your lunch or plan to eat out

1:30 to 2:00 wet on wet demonstration

2:00 to 2:30 Everyone try wet on wet

2:30 to 4:30 Everyone paint own things, individual help

4:30 to 5:00 group critique

Day two:

9:00 to 10:00 full sheet demonstration

10:00 to 11:30 everyone do a full sheet painting

11:30 to 12 put up full sheet paintings, and talk about what was learned by painting fast

12:00 to 12:30 finish details, and how to go backwards and how to use a scrubber, how and when to use opaque white

12:30 to 1:30. Lunch

1:30 to 4:30 everyone paint, individual help demonstrations by Joy as requested

4:30 to 5:00 fill out workshop questionnaire- anything we didn’t cover.

Supplies required

  • Your usual personal watercolour supplies

  • A subject (still life, photo or sketches) of something you would love to try painting in the afternoon

  • 1 sheet 22 x 30”, 140 pound watercolour paper for the exercise

  • 1 board or piece of cardboard at least 22 x 30

  • 1 round watercolour brush (a #10 or bigger)

  • At least six pieces of approximately 5 x 7 watercolour paper for the Sketches

  • One artist’s permanent black ink pen (either Faber Castell Pitt artist Pen M or B Staedtler pigment liner) size .5 or larger

If courses must be cancelled registrations will be refunded in full. The personal security of students and instructors is paramount.

Contact Art Lab to ensure there is still room in the course. If there is a space in the course for you, we will ask you for payment via e-transfer or cash. If you would like to pay via credit card, please note there is an additional 4% transaction fee. Please indicate if you would like to pay by cheque and we will do our best to accommodate.

Cancellation Policy

If for any reason the participant wishes to cancel prior to two weeks before the commencement of the course, the full fee minus a 10% service fee will be refunded. Please note that there will be no refunds if the participant cancels within two weeks of the commencement of the course.
