Painting is a mode of expression that goes far beyond the academic rendering of a subject or a concept. The main goal of this course is to explain different ways (philosophical and technical) to better connect the emotions of the painter with its subject matter. A lot of attention will be given to power of colors, light and gesture. How to simplify and magnify things to express the feelings.
How to break the wall of simple narrative rendition and develop a personal language.

The day will be broken into two sections, 9am to noon and 1pm to 4pm.
There will be a mix of plein air (weather permitting) and studio work.
In the mornings Marc will demo his technique, palette and approach. Then the students will apply this knowledge to their work in the afternoon either in the studio or en plein air.
A group critique will be held at the end of the last day.

Marc Grandbois
Marc is a very well known artist from L'Anse Saint-Jean, Quebec and is no stranger to Parrsboro where he has participated in the Parrsboro International Plein Air Festival since its first year in 2017. He has won awards in both 2017 and 2018 where it was noted that his ability to express light is masterful.
In his home world of the Saguenay Marc is motivated by the exceptional beauty of the landscape and the unique environment of the fjord. The Nordic landscape has always been a source of inspiration. His work is characterized by the priority given to the atmosphere, the casual brushstroker and the richness of color. His palette, sometimes subtle, sometimes fauve, adjusts to suit the ambiences he wants to create. "I firmly believe that figurative art, especially the landscape, remains very current if it transcends the narrative. In a way it becomes a basis for experimenting with gestures, color and light." Marc's work are found in many public and private collections in Canada and abroad.
Art Lab is honoured to have Marc join our faculty of highly qualified instructors.
