Course Description
This five-day course is a deep dive into the art, craft and skill needed to develop a large two and three-dimensional collective sculpture.
Students will be challenged to work together in the realization of a design depicting the life found in a water column of the Bay of Fundy from snails, clams, and plant life at the bottom, to fish and diving birds in the upper section. This large collective piece will be created from a twelve foot (3.5 m) tall piece of white pine 18-24” in diameter. Each student will be responsible for two feet of creative space.
Students will be provided with the large tools needed to work on such a large scale and instructed on their basic use.
You will be part of The Water Column Project, a five-year project, where we create a column of water from five different periods of life in the Bay of Fundy, from the carboniferous period to the present day. The large piece of finished work will become public art displayed in the natural environment on the shores of the bay. One piece is carved each year.
NB. There will be a two hour sharpening session and meet and greet the night before, August 16, 2022.
Course Details
Jennifer believes that hands-on application results in the development of the fundamental building blocks of carving. This results in students getting personal one on one help, discussion, or critique as the situation demands.
All days will begin at 9 am and end at 4 pm with a one hour lunch break and numerous breaks during the sessions in order to preserve focus and thus avoid mistakes. Students will be able to continue carving beyond the end of the scheduled day.
