About the Instructor

Lynda Shalagan began her art education in Vancouver, BC, taking a craft program and a fine art courses at Capilano College in North Vancouver. She subsequently transferred to the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design (NSCAD) (BFA ‘82). At present, Lynda lives in Halifax, teaches workshops and classes to adults and children in various media while she continues her studio work in painting, assemblage, and collage. Course Description

This course will explore the interpretation of the natural world through depth, texture, and design. Through an emphasis on colour, value, composition, and surface manipulation, the student will learn a comprehensive variety of techniques and processes that will enable a realistic representation of a desired subject or a more abstract representation.

Working both from photographs still life arrangements or plein air (weather permitting), the student will create small sketches and studies as well as larger, more complete works. The workshop is suitable for the beginner or more advanced painter in either acrylic or oil paint.

Details

Daily schedule: 10am to 4pm, Lunch break 12h to 1pm.

Materials

Below is a list of materials each student must bring themselves.

  • Acrylic or oil paints (a good variety including the primary colours: red, yellow, and blue)

  • Medium to slow down drying time if using acrylic

  • Palette and palette knife

  • Assorted brushes

  • A few small and a few medium size canvases or wood panels (6 or so)

  • Squeegee and / or a plastic scraper (I will bring a number of the ones I use for use and / or purchase)

  • Empty plastic squeeze bottle for water dripping (such as dish soap or ketchup / mustard bottle)

  • Blow dryer

  • Garden / Landscape photos and / or a book of images for reference (I will bring a number of these as well)

  • Rags (cotton is best) or paper towels

  • B pencils and sketchbook or paper for value studies

Optional: watercolours, pastels (or you could use watered down acrylic paint) and suitable paper (probably watercolour for wet mediums) for colour studies

If for any reason the participant wishes to cancel before two weeks prior to the commencement of the course, the full fee (minus the materials fee and a 10% service fee) will be refunded. Please note that there will be no refunds if the participant cancels within two weeks of the commencement of the course.
